The Dwarves of Tir-Nâ-Bor thought they were protected. No mortal force could ever launch an assault on their elemental fortress. They were almost right, but the curse that hit them was not of this world and the enemy came from within.
Dwarves began to disappear, many think there should have been more done at the time to investigate, but it was put down to tunnel collapses and bouts of wanderlust. No-one really knows where they went or what happened but when the missing returned they were very, very different.
Someone or something has taken possession of their bodies and of their souls, they had become puppets, pawns subjugated to a demonic will. Their bodies, minds and souls were twisted beyond recognition. The demonic entity is sometimes known as the Despot, a name whispered in fear that has become the Dwarves worst nightmare, their own Kin have turned against them, loved ones have become shambling monstrosities, brothers have become hated enemies and nothing can reverse this hideous mutation.
The Chasm of Mid-Nor is the new home to these creatures, the possessed Dwarves lie in waiting for their time to come. Maybe the subjugation of the Dwarves is just a step in the preparation of the arrival of the Despot's real servants. Who knows what ghastly creatures are preparing themselves to surge from the depths of the chasm? What is known is that these mid-nor dwarves are spreading their terror, raiding into the home of the Tir-Na-Bor dwarves who staunchly defend against them. The evil eyes of the Despot are turning to other areas, the whole of Aarklash is now under threat from this new terror.
Mid-Nor dwarves are not as resilient as their un-twisted cousins and they have lost the Hard-Boiled ability, however in return they have got some excellent abilities including "Possessed" which has a similar effect to Hard-Boiled, but this time only the wound effects are reduced not the actual wound level. (Which means they are not as hard to kill as normal dwarves). All mid-nor get the possessed ability. They also cause fear which can be very useful. Some of their characters also get some ability boosts such as regeneration, mutagenic and Toxic which makes many of the Mid-nor characters as hard as nails.
Mid-Nor dwarves are cheap in terms of points cost and they would easily outnumber their cousins in any game. They have been designed to spotlight the idea of a swarm of twisted terrors flooding out of their caverns and onto their enemy.
Their basic warriors are very cheap at only 8 points and are capable of doing damage if you throw large numbers at your enemy. They're only strength 4 which isn't fantastic but for 8 points they do a good job. The halberdiers and Warriors of the abyss are a bit better for an extra couple of points and have higher strengths but you'll still need to use a few of them, but with their low points costs that won't be a problem. You don't need to worry about having models that look the same either as Rackham have produced some truly twisted little chaos dwarves, the warriors of the abyss come with different weapon arms and shields so you can create different looking figures. The detail on these is fantastic and you can create a truly individual army, even the shields have eyes!
The Mid-Nor come into their own with the use of characters, who are very tough and have some really cool abilities. In addition their sorcerers get the use of some nasty spells and boosts that can really make a difference to the outcome of any combat.
Their specialist troops are better than average with the sentinels and flail-bearers being capable of high damage and good defence, they also get some good abilities such as war-fury and scout. The incubus box set is a terrifying choice as the incubus are toxic and they are capable of taking out quite a lot of enemy warriors. The Cyclops is a must for any Mid-Nor army, this is a real centre-peice and will smash through the defences of your enemy allowing your forces to swarm all overe the survivors
Overall the mid-not are quite a nasty army, you do need a lot of them but that's their nature. It's all about the swarm with these guys and it's quite intimidating to see a tide of horrible twisted little nightmares come pouring across the battlefield at you.
Due to the intricate detail on the mid-nor I'd recommend this faction to any experienced painter who wanted a challenge, these would be quite difficult for beginners, although they are a lot of fun to paint.
